About Beginner Bookworms 📖

A nonprofit built on the belief that every child deserves to read, dream, and grow.

Our Story

Born from a Simple Belief

Beginner Bookworms is led by Jake Babula, the developer and CEO behind Wormy AI and the digital tools that power this literacy platform.

The mission is simple: help young readers build stronger literacy skills, improve reading confidence, and support cognitive growth through accessible books, interactive worksheets, and Wormy AI.

Wormy AI is designed as a friendly reading assistant that helps children understand words, strengthen comprehension, practice writing, and stay engaged while learning at their own pace, all with an environmentally-friendly design. Unlike many cloud-based Artificial Intelligence tools, Wormy uses an advanced lightweight learning brain built directly into the site, so it does not rely on large data centers or water-consuming infrastructure.

🧩

Cognates

✍️

Sentence Frames

Use structured frames to answer reading questions with complete English sentences.

📖

Passage Support

Find the topic, main idea, key details, and evidence in short English passages.

Example Word Help

careful = cuidadoso/cuidosa. A careful reader pays attention and checks details.

because = porque. Use it to explain a reason: “The character is nervous because...”

evidence = prueba or evidencia. Evidence is a detail from the passage that supports your answer.

Helpful Answer Frames

Grade 1–2: I see ___. It is ___.

Grade 3: The main idea is ___ because ___.

Grade 4–5: One detail that supports my answer is ___, which shows ___.

How Spanish Support Works

Spanish Support for English Learning

Spanish support gives English learners quick meaning, vocabulary, and direction support so they can practice reading, writing, and answering in English with more confidence.

How it works: first understand the English task, then use Spanish support for key words or directions, then answer in English using a sentence frame or text evidence.
🔁

Translate the Direction

English: Find the main idea.
Spanish support: Busca la idea principal.
Goal: Answer in English.

🗣️

Build English Sentences

Frame: The character feels ___ because ___.
Support: “because” means “porque.”
Goal: Use the English frame.

📌

Understand Key Words

evidence means a detail from the text.
Spanish support: evidencia/prueba.
Goal: Find the English evidence.

Wormy can now help directly inside worksheet questions, including ELL questions, so students can read the question and ask for help without leaving the worksheet.
